Kootenay Lake.
While on board our 22ft Starcraft you will enjoy the scenery and some world class fishing. Nestled between the Selkirk and Purcell mountain ranges, Kootenay Lake runs over 80 miles and produces some of the largest rainbow trout in the world. The lake is also home to dolly varden (bull trout) and kokanee salmon. Rainbows up to 35Lbs (Canadian record), and dollies up to 29Lbs (another Canadian record) have been caught here. Also, kokanee salmon from 1 - 5Lbs can be caught. So no matter what time of year, there is always some kind of fish to pursue.
Our boat is fully covered and heated for your comfort. Our guides all have over 10yrs experience and will make your day enjoyable.
So, welcome aboard. Put your feet up, relax, and enjoy a wonderful experience on Kootenay Lake.
Columbia River.
The mighty Columbia River is home to many species of fish. We fish for rainbow trout, walleye, and kokanee. Rainbows average 1 - 5Lbs with some over 10Lbs being caught. This year, an amazing 23Lb rainbow was caught in our river. While this is rare for the river, now we know, they are in there. Walleye up to 15Lbs have been caught this year also. Fly fishing, trolling and spin casting are all techniques that we use on the river.

Kootenay Lake:
Believe it or not, there have been some big fish coming in already. As a matter of fact, one of the boys from my dock brought in a Rainbow Trout weighing in at 28 Lbs last week. He caught this monster by accident while fishing for dollies down 100 ft on a plug. What a nice suprise (congratulations George). Also some rainbows being caught on the surface. A nice 21 Lb 'bow' came in yesterday on a bucktail fly.
With that being said, the water temperature is still hanging around 60 degrees. This is usually a little bit warm for the fish to be feeding heavily. However, with the weather changing and temperatures dropping, fishing should only get better and better.
Trolling with bucktail flies on the surface will start producing more and more big Rainbows. Also, using plugs on the surface and down to 100ft is producing some nice Rainbows and Dollies.
With 28 Lbs being the biggest fish so far this fall, I'm looking forward to the rest of the fall/winter fishing season.

Columbia River:
The river has been producing fish as always.
Rainbows up to 15 lbs coming in, with the average size being 2 - 5 lbs. Using spinners and worms for best luck.
Also, fly fishing still producing some good fish. Switching to sinking lines with wooly buggers and streamers working well.
Walleye fishing has been great!! We've been landing up to 20 fish each day with the average being 2 - 4 Lbs. Larger Walleye up to 15 Lbs have been taken in the last couple of weeks. Using jigs with worms on the bottom producing the most.
We will be switching from River fishing to Kootenay Lake fishing now as the colder weather approaches.

Kootenay Lake:
Well, it was a great month of fishing in November and is continuing to be great in December. We've been landing lots of good fish lately. Rainbows up to 28 lbs and Dollies up to 15 lbs coming in. Lots of Rainbows being caught on the surface as well as down deep. Using bucktail flies on the surface and/or plugs from the surface down 100 ft for the Rainbows. Even Bill Normans and Waterdogs are working on the calm days. Dollies are hitting on plugs or flasher/hoochie down 50 - 100 ft. Water temperature is keeping fish active and makes for some very exciting fights. Looking forward to catching a lot more big fish throughout the winter.
Colors working well are: greys, purples, greens. Blue has been working really well on the lighter days.
Columbia River:
The river has been producing fish as always. We are done fishing for Walleye now. Most Walleye have headed back down to the lakes. Rainbow fishing has been good as usual.
Rainbows up to 10 lbs coming in, with the average size being 2 - 5 lbs. Using spinners and worms for best luck. Also, still fly fishing for the strong 'bows'. Sinking lines with stimulators, wooly buggers working best.
We will be concentrating on Kootenay Lake for the next 6 months as this is the best time for fishing the main lake.

Nov 2005: 28 lb Rainbow taken from Kootenay lake.

Here are some older fishing reports

Kootenay Lake:
With the weather creating some cooler temperatures, we have been seeing some fish come to the surface lately.
We hooked 8 fish last Sunday, which is pretty good for this time of year. Most fish were small Rainbows around 2 - 3 lbs on the surface, but 1 Dolly @ 10 lbs came to us off the downrigger. Rainbows up to 17 lbs and Dollies up to 12 lbs have been caught lately. Still a little slow though. Water temperatures need to drop before fishing will really turn on.
Using bucktail flies on the surface for Rainbows. Using plugs or flasher/hoochie between 40 - 100ft for Rainbows and Dollies.
Fly fishing in the West Arm has been very productive. Rainbows ranging from 1 - 10 lbs.
Derbies are coming up !!!! Feel free to contact me for more info.
Woodbury Resort Thanksgiving Derby ........ Oct. 8, 9, 10
Nelson City Police Derby .................. Oct. 15, 16
Beachcomber Resort Derby .................. Nov. 11, 12, 13
Columbia River:
As usual, the river is producing good numbers of fish. Rainbows up to 10 lbs and Walleye up to 13 lbs. Even heard of a couple Rainbows over 17lbs lately.
Walleye is hot. As usual, lots of Walleye being caught during August and September is generally better. Lots of 20 - 30 fish days. Using worms near the bottom or jigs with twister tails.
Fly fishing was hot during July and August with floating lines. Now we have switched to sinking lines and still producing lots of fish. Lots of fish feeding in the back eddies..

Kootenay Lake:
Hot, Hot, Hot….. Kootenay Lake is hot right now. The lake has risen and the water temperature has reached 50 degrees and the fish are feeding. Rainbows up to 22 lbs have come in this week and Dollies up to 15 lbs.
We hooked 9 fish in 4 hours the other day. The biggest was an 18 lb Rainbow, with the others ranging from 5 – 12 lbs. Lots of boats catching fish now.
Using bucktail flies on the surface, as well as apex lures (hockey sticks). Colors working best right now are greens, blues, golds. These colors should continue to work well as long as the water remains cloudy.
The fishing has just begun to get good and will only get better and better through the month of May and into June. Let's get out there !!!!!!!!
NOW'S THE TIME………
Duncan Lake:
Dollies have finally slowed down on the Duncan. But kokanee are feeding right now. We landed only a couple dollies last week, but lots of kokanee. Most kokanee are 8 – 12 inches, however, we landed a few that hit 18 inches last week. Big for kokanee.
Beautiful time of year to be on Duncan Lake anyways.
Columbia River:
As usual, the river is producing good numbers of fish. Rainbows up to 8 lbs and even a few kokanee being caught. Even heard of a couple Rainbows over 12 lbs lately.
Fly fishing with sinking line and wooly buggers or stonefly working well. Also spin casting with 3-way rig and worms or roe working for rainbows.
We will be concentrating on Kootenay Lake until the middle to end of June because of the great fishing there.

Happy New Year Everybody !!!
Kootenay Lake:
Well, fishing is still hot out there. We've enjoyed lots of 'big fish' days. Bucktail flies on the surface for rainbows or plugs, flasher/hoochie down to 120ft for dollies and rainbows. Congratulations to Dirk Macfarlane for his biggest fish ever. Dirk landed an 18Lb Rainbow Trout while on a charter with us on Dec. 19. That was only 1 of 4 fish that day for Dirk. He'll be back again.
We enjoyed another exciting day on the lake on Dec. 29th. Shandy Mowery and his crew arrived for their annual Christmas fishing trip. They found time to take a day off of hockey and enjoy a day of fishing with us. The day started around 9:00am. The boys were actually on time, although, most people would've been ready to leave by 8:00. Anyways, we had the lines in by 9:30 and we were fishing. After about an hour of trolling without any hits, I changed the colors of our lures and assured the boys that the fish will turn on. I told them that 11:00am has been the feeding time for the past week. Sure enough, 11:00am rolled around and I thought I would swing in to the bay to hook the fellows into a Dolly for starters. As we were all staring at the downrigger rod, expecting a dolly to hit anytime, the rod on the other side of the boat started screaming line. First up was Flexy. We all expected him to lose this fish as he usually does, but he played it like a pro and landed our first fish of the day. 13Lbs-4oz Rainbow trout. Good start boys. After getting the lines back in the water, only a few minutes went by when the downrigger went off. Dale was up next. He fought this lazy dolly to the boat and now had a nice fish for the barbecue. 6Lb dolly, way to go Dale. Only half an hour passed when I started moving the downrigger up and down to try and trigger a strike. Well, it worked. But not on the downrigger. Once again the bucktail fly was being attacked by a Rainbow. The line screamed off and it was Mowery's turn at the rod. Not even affected by the specialty coffees on board, Shandy fought this beauty for a couple minutes. While he was fighting his big Rainbow, off goes the downrigger again. Fish on !!! Double header !! Sweed grabbed the downrigger rod and fought his 6Lb Dolly to the boat. Just after netting the dolly, Shandy was ready with his Rainbow near the boat. I unhooked the dolly and then swooshed the net beside the boat and netted a 13Lb Rainbow. Congratulations Sweed and Mowery.
We landed 2 more fish that day and headed to the dock for pictures. What a great way to enjoy time off between Christmas and New years. The boys are booked for this time next year. Hopefully we can repeat.
